ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of medicinal plants application as an edible functional food resource. We carried out to develop a traditional functional beverage by using hot-water extraction of 4 medicinal plants (Polygonatun sibiricum, Ophiopogonis radix, Lycii fructus, Schizandriae frutcus) and we examined the effects of drink on physiological response during exercise and recovery phase. The subjects were male baseball players, and exercise protocol was performed with 45 minutes treadmill running and 85% VO2 max intensity. Brix, pH and titratable acidity of developed drink were 9.5%, 3.3 and 0.22%. The approximate nutritional composition of beverage was carbohydrate, 5.98%, total dietary fiber, 0.42%, crude protein, 0.70%, crude fat, 0.20% and crude ash, 0.20%. Developed. traditional functional beverage contained K (4.00 mg%), Na (3.68 mg%), Ca (2.54 mg%), Mg (1.60 mg%) and Fe (0.29 mg%). Developed beverage drinking group showed a lowest heart rate during exercise and recovery phase than the other two group (water group and ion beverage group). In the change of blood lactate concentration, developed beverage intake group showed a significant lowest values during exercise and recovery phase. And blood hematocrit values and osmolarity were lowest in the developed beverage intake group. In these results, exercise performance capacity was expected to improve most highly with the developed drink from composition with medicinal plants. Also developed beverage was effective in recovery of exercise-induced fatigue. Thus developed drink with medicinal plants can be used as a functional material improving decrease fatigue effects in beverage industry.

ABSTRACT

The present experimental study was designed to address two issues. The first was to investigate whether oxidation voltage of titanium implants influenced bone tissue responses after an in vivo implantation. The second aim was to investigate secondary stability change after 1 to 3months period. Screw-shaped implants with a wide range of oxide properties were prepared by electrochemical oxidation methods, where the oxide thickness varied in the range of 3-15micrometer. The micro structure revealed pore sizes of 1-3micrometer, the crystal structures of the titanium oxide were amorphous, anatase and a mixture of anatase and rutile type. Bone tissue responses were evaluated by resonance frequency measurements that were undertaken 1 to 3months after insertion in the rabbit tibia. It was concluded that no statistical difference of RFA values was found between the groups, RFA gains after 1month and 3months were calculated.

ABSTRACT

Statement of problem. Titanium is the most important material for biomedical and dental implants because of their high corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility. These beneficial properties are due to a protective passive oxide film that spontaneously forms on the surface. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the responses of osteoblast-like cells on different surface treatments on Ti discs. Material and Methods. Group 1 represented the machined surface with no treatment. Group 2 surfaces were sandblasted with 50microm Al2O3 under 5 kgf/cm2 of pressure. Groups 3 and 4 were sandblasted under the same conditions. The samples were treated on a titanium oxide surface with reactive sputter depositioning and thermal oxidation at 600degree C (Group 3) and 800degree C (Group 4) for one hour in an oxygen environment. The chemical composition and microtopography were analyzed by XRD, XPS, SEM and optical interferometer. The stability of TiO2 layer was studied by potentiodynamic curve. To evaluate cell response, osteoblast extracted from femoral bone marrow of young adult rat were cultured for cell attachment, proliferation and morphology on each titanium discs. Results and Conclusion. The results were as follows : 1.Surface roughness values were, from the lowest to the highest, machined group, 800degree C thermal oxidation group, 600degree C thermal oxidation group and blasted group. The Ra value of blasted group was significantly higher than that of 800degree C thermal oxidation group (P=0.003), which was not different from that of 600degree C thermal oxidation group (P0.05). 3. The level of cell proliferation showed no difference among the groups after one day, three days, and seven days (P>0.05). 4. The morphology and arrangement of the cells varied with surface roughness of the discs.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to obtain the nutritional values and objective data of uncooked powdered food (UPF) in korea. We interviewed 27 healthy female subjects aged over 25 years living in the lksan area. We just replaced common breakfast and dinner of the subjects with UPF. Their dietary intake status was evaluated by 24-hour recall method. Their body compositions were measured using body fat analyzer. Also we conducted hematological and clinical analysis of blood. The intake of energy, lipid and protein has decreased as people started to take UPF, but the intake of vitamins and minerals has increased. The quality of meals has improved after taking UPF. Due to the energy loss by taking UPF, weight and body fat gradually lessened. Among the lost weight the percentage of the body fat was high and we judged that the process of losing weight was successful. It is hard to predict whether weight loss will occur to people who are already in shape or not, but if overweight and obesity people regularly take UPF instead of other food products, we assume that UPF will help lessening body fat. The most positive change among biochemical changes by taking UPF was decreasing of serum lipid contents. The concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol gradually decreased and decreased intently after 12weeks. Serum HDL-cholesterol gradually increased and serum triglyceride showed gradual decrement. When healthy adult women replaced two of three meals with UPF for 3months, we were able to see some useful changes like decrement of body fat and serum lipid control and during this 3month period, no significant nutritional problems occurred. Complete judgement on UPF may be difficult with these conclusions but if people take a nomal meal once and replenish iron from taking UPF twice a day, we assume that replacing UPF with regular meal not be a problem in nutritional status. If other experiments on the effects of UPF proceed, we believe that those experiments will be very helpful in judging the nutritional value of UPF.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: In general, it is known that repetitive regular stimuli induce tolerance and repetitive irregular stimuli induce sensitization. We sought to determine the dopamine response in the rat prefrontal cortex under the repetitive regular and repetitive irregular stimuli. METHODS: After giving irregular and regular electrical stimuli repetitively to rats, we measured the dopamine levels of prefrontal cortex. We compared these results with the dopamine levels of prefrontal cortex of rats which were given just one electrical stimulus. Samples were obtained using in vivo brain microdialysis. Dopamine levels in the samples were measured by high pressure liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. RESULTS: 1) Dopamine levels of prefrontal cortex of both repetitive regular stimuli group and repetitive irregular stimuli group increased after electrical stimuli. 2) Dopamine levels of prefrontal cortex also significantly increased after just one electrical stimulus. 3) Among the repetitive regular stimuli group, repetitive irregular stimuli group and one stimulus group, the dopamine response was most significant in the repetitive irregular stimuli group. CONCLUSIONS: Repetitive irregular electrical stimuli induce sensitization of prefrontal cortex and repetitive regular electrical stimuli don't induce tolerance of prefrontal cortex.
